We’ve got three ways for you to help save forests, thanks to the combined work of three different Green America programs. First, from our Climate Action Program comes the good news that under the new administration, it looks like the EPA will be getting tougher on coal companies that want to blow up Appalachian mountaintops in search of the dirtiest fossil fuel. While the Bush administration never opposed a single new application for mountain top removal over the course of eight years, Obama’s EPA has announced that all 79 mountain top removal permits currently under review by the Army Corp of Engineers likely violate the Clean Water Act. Mountaintop removal is one of the least responsible ways to mine one of the least responsible fuels. It adds deforestation and water pollution to the already-very-long list of ills associated with coal mining. The EPA needs to hear from you that you support enforcement of the Clean Water Act, to protect Appalachian communities and forests. Next, our Better Paper Project announces the debut of a new letter writing campaign on the Better Paper Web site, designed to help you encourage magazines to print on recycled paper. Our Better Paper staff works with magazine publishers to help improve a wasteful industry, and they know which points are most effective in persuading publishers to make the switch. Please check out their work at the Better Paper Web site, and add your voice to a rising chorus demanding that the publishing industry become more responsible in its paper sourcing. Finally, from our Green Business Network™, we bring you our latest Faces of the Green Pages interview with Stephen Baker at Greenline Paper Company. Greenline not only stocks hundreds of recycled-paper products for your green office (file folders, post-its, desk calendars, planners, etc.), but also offers many other impressive recycled products like rulers, pencils, and paper clips. Please forward all three of these simple actions to everyone you know who is interested in saving forests. Thanks for all you do, Action: Support the EPA’s stand against Big Coal
This is a dramatic reversal, and one that brings hope that the destruction of our mountains in Appalachia may slow or come to an end. Sign on to our letter to the EPA today thanking them for making the right decision on the current permits, and urging that the EPA continue to use the Clean Water Act to prevent the dumping of waste into Appalachia rivers and streams. We need to raise our voices together to make sure the EPA doesn’t approve these permits in the future. News: Green your office with Greenline Paper
We couldn’t agree more! In this month’s interview, Stephen becomes the latest member of our national green-business community to be profiled in our Faces of the Green Pages interview series. Read his interview to find out how a trip to Central America inspired Stephen to plant a new green business in the middle of Pennsylvania, and how you can get your office “green certified” from Greenline Paper. “The Better Paper project has big goals, and we could really use the help of our dedicated Green America members,” says Keaty Gross, Better Paper Project coordinator. “Whether you’re thanking a magazine for its environmental commitment or suggesting they turn over a new, greener leaf, reader encouragement influences a magazine’s paper-purchasing decisions.” A number of magazines have already made greener choices, and actively work with our Better Paper Project to continually green their magazine (visit the Better Magazine List to find out which ones). Other large publishers remain hold-outs and need to hear from you. For example, check out this article from last week’s New York Times, about what it called “the culture of spending” at behemoth publisher Condé Nast. This is the same Condé Nast that insists using recycled paper is too expensive. Paper choices are climate choices – we need our global forests intact to fight climate change. Condé Nast (and all publishers not using recycled paper) needs to hear from you that you don’t want your news and entertainment delivered on paper that contributes to the destruction of the world’s forests. Ask them to go green today. |
