Action: Support the EPA’s stand against Big Coal

For eight long years, the Bush administration rubber-stamped any new mountaintop removal permit submitted for review by the Army Corps of Engineers. Now, under the new administration, the EPA recognizes that a process that fills local streams with millions of tons of debris likely violates the Clean Water Act, and has ordered all 79 current permits to be revised, and face being rejected.

This is a dramatic reversal, and one that brings hope that the destruction of our mountains in Appalachia may slow or come to an end.

Sign on to our letter to the EPA today thanking them for making the right decision on the current permits, and urging that the EPA continue to use the Clean Water Act to prevent the dumping of waste into Appalachia rivers and streams. We need to raise our voices together to make sure the EPA doesn’t approve these permits in the future.

Resources: Join our letter-writing campaign for greener magazines

We’ve got four new letters on our Better Paper Web site to help you help us help the publishing industry turn green. Your comments to magazines as a valued subscriber are powerful. We provide letters for you to send to all the magazines you purchase or receive, including alumni and association magazines, which value your input as an alumnus or a member.

“The Better Paper project has big goals, and we could really use the help of our dedicated Green America members,” says Keaty Gross, Better Paper Project coordinator. “Whether you’re thanking a magazine for its environmental commitment or suggesting they turn over a new, greener leaf, reader encouragement influences a magazine’s paper-purchasing decisions.”

A number of magazines have already made greener choices, and actively work with our Better Paper Project to continually green their magazine (visit the Better Magazine List to find out which ones). Other large publishers remain hold-outs and need to hear from you. For example, check out this article from last week’s New York Times, about what it called “the culture of spending” at behemoth publisher Condé Nast. This is the same Condé Nast that insists using recycled paper is too expensive.

Paper choices are climate choices – we need our global forests intact to fight climate change. Condé Nast (and all publishers not using recycled paper) needs to hear from you that you don’t want your news and entertainment delivered on paper that contributes to the destruction of the world’s forests. Ask them to go green today.
