<p>We&#8217;ve got <strong>three ways for you to help save forests</strong>, thanks to the combined work of three different Green America programs.</p>
<p><strong>First, from our Climate Action Program</strong> comes the good news that under the new administration, it looks like the EPA will be getting tougher on coal companies that want to blow up Appalachian mountaintops in search of the dirtiest fossil fuel. While the <span id="lw_1255031954_1">Bush administration</span> never opposed a single new application for mountain top removal over the course of eight years, Obama&#8217;s EPA has announced that all 79 mountain top removal permits currently under review by the <span id="lw_1255031954_2">Army Corp of Engineers</span> likely violate the <span id="lw_1255031954_3">Clean Water Act</span>.</p>
<p><span id="lw_1255031954_4">Mountaintop removal</span> is one of the least responsible ways to mine one of the least responsible fuels. It adds deforestation and <span id="lw_1255031954_5" style="border-bottom: 1px dashed #0066cc; cursor: pointer;">water pollution</span> to the already-very-long list of ills associated with <span id="lw_1255031954_6">coal mining</span>. <a onclick="return theMainWindow.showLinkWarning(this)" rel="nofollow" href="http://lists.coopamerica.org:8383/t/4638009/735448/713814/0/?u=aHR0cDovL3d3dy5ncmVlbmFtZXJpY2F0b2RheS5vcmcvdGFrZWFjdGlvbi9NVFIv&amp;x=ef1b2e7c" target="_blank"><span id="lw_1255031954_7">The EPA needs to hear from you</span></a> that you support enforcement of the Clean Water Act, to protect Appalachian communities and forests.</p>
<p><strong>Next, our Better Paper Project announces</strong> the debut of a <a rel="nofollow" href="http://us.mc1119.mail.yahoo.com/mc/welcome?.gx=1&amp;.tm=1255025626&amp;.rand=8vde7aftihv25#resources"><span id="lw_1255031954_8">new letter writing campaign</span></a> on the Better Paper Web site, designed to help you encourage magazines to print on <span id="lw_1255031954_9" style="border-bottom: 1px dashed #0066cc; cursor: pointer;">recycled paper</span>. Our Better Paper staff works with magazine publishers to help improve a wasteful industry, and they know which points are most effective in persuading publishers to make the switch. Please check out their work at the Better Paper Web site, and add your voice to a rising chorus demanding that the publishing industry become more responsible in its paper sourcing.</p>
<p><strong>Finally, from our Green Business Network™,</strong> we bring you our latest <a rel="nofollow" href="http://us.mc1119.mail.yahoo.com/mc/welcome?.gx=1&amp;.tm=1255025626&amp;.rand=8vde7aftihv25#news"><span id="lw_1255031954_10"><em>Faces of the Green Pages</em> interview</span></a> with <span id="lw_1255031954_11" style="border-bottom: 1px dashed #0066cc; cursor: pointer;">Stephen Baker</span> at Greenline Paper Company. Greenline not only stocks hundreds of recycled-paper products for your green office (<span id="lw_1255031954_12">file folders</span>, post-its, desk calendars, planners, etc.), but also offers many other impressive <span id="lw_1255031954_13">recycled products</span> like rulers, pencils, and paper clips.</p>
<p>Please <a onclick="return theMainWindow.showLinkWarning(this)" rel="nofollow" href="http://lists.coopamerica.org:8383/t/4638009/735448/713813/0/?u=aHR0cDovL3d3dy5ncmVlbmFtZXJpY2F0b2RheS5vcmcvdG9vbHMvZW1haWxmcmllbmQuY2ZtP3BhZ2U9L2VtYWlscy9jYW5ld3MvMjAwOTEwMDg%3d&amp;x=67d9a060" target="_blank"><span id="lw_1255031954_14">forward all three of these simple actions</span></a> to everyone you know who is interested in saving forests.</p>
<p>Thanks for all you do,<br />

We need forests, the lungs of our planet, to stand healthy and strong for combating <span id="lw_1255031954_16">climate change</span>, protecting biodiversity – from birds to microorganisms, and sheltering the many indigenous peoples who live within them.</p>
<p><a rel="nofollow" name="action"></a><img src="http://www.greenamericatoday.org/emails/canews/template/010609ACTION.jpg" alt="Action" width="327" height="22" /></p>
<div id="NewsContentItem">
<p style="font-size: 11pt; color: #001100; font-weight: bold;">Action: <strong>Support the EPA&#8217;s stand against Big Coal </strong></p>
<p><img style="border: 1px solid gray; margin: 3px;" src="http://www.greenamericatoday.org/images/general/coaltrucks98x73.jpg" border="0" alt="Stop mountaintop removal mining!" hspace="0" vspace="0" width="98" height="73" align="left" />For eight <a href="http://www.movingplusstorage.com/index.php?p=get-a-long-distance-moving-quote" class="kblinker" title="More about long &raquo;">long</a> years, the Bush administration rubber-stamped any new mountaintop removal permit submitted for review by the <span id="lw_1255031954_17">Army Corps of Engineers</span>. Now, under the new administration, the EPA recognizes that a process that fills <a href="http://www.movingplusstorage.com/index.php?p=local" class="kblinker" title="More about local &raquo;">local</a> streams with millions of tons of debris likely violates the Clean Water Act, and has ordered all 79 current permits to be revised, and face being rejected.</p>
<p>This is a dramatic reversal, and one that brings hope that the destruction of our mountains in <span id="lw_1255031954_18">Appalachia</span> may slow or come to an end.</p>
<p>Sign on to our letter to the EPA today thanking them for making the right decision on the current permits, and urging that the EPA continue to use the Clean Water Act to prevent the dumping of waste into Appalachia rivers and streams. We need to raise our voices together to make sure the EPA doesn&#8217;t approve these permits in the future.</p>

Your comments to magazines as a valued subscriber are powerful. We provide letters for you to send to all the magazines you purchase or receive, including alumni and association magazines, which value your input as an alumnus or a member.</p>
<p>&#8220;The Better Paper project has big goals, and we could really use the help of our dedicated Green America members,&#8221; says Keaty Gross, Better Paper Project coordinator. &#8220;Whether you&#8217;re thanking a magazine for its environmental commitment or suggesting they turn over a new, greener leaf, reader encouragement influences a magazine&#8217;s paper-purchasing decisions.&#8221;</p>
<p>A number of magazines have already made greener choices, and actively work with our Better Paper Project to continually green their magazine (<a onclick="return theMainWindow.showLinkWarning(this)" rel="nofollow" href="http://lists.coopamerica.org:8383/t/4638009/735448/713200/0/?u=aHR0cDovL2JldHRlcnBhcGVyLm5pbmcuY29tL3BhZ2UvYmV0dGVyLXBhcGVycy1iZXR0ZXItbWFnYXppbmU%3d&amp;x=97edcc78" target="_blank"><span id="lw_1255031954_24">visit the Better Magazine List to find out which ones</span></a>). Other large publishers remain hold-outs and need to hear from you. For example, <a onclick="return theMainWindow.showLinkWarning(this)" rel="nofollow" href="http://lists.coopamerica.org:8383/t/4638009/735448/713816/0/?u=aHR0cDovL3d3dy5ueXRpbWVzLmNvbS8yMDA5LzA5LzI4L2J1c2luZXNzL21lZGlhLzI4Y29uZGUuaHRtbA%3d%3d&amp;x=a8a88aae" target="_blank"><span id="lw_1255031954_25">check out this article</span></a> from last week&#8217;s <em><span id="lw_1255031954_26" style="background: transparent none repeat scroll 0% 0%; cursor: pointer;">New York Times</span>, </em>about what it called &#8220;the culture of spending&#8221; at behemoth publisher Condé Nast. This is the same Condé Nast that insists using recycled paper is too expensive.</p>
<p>Paper choices are climate choices – we need our global forests intact to fight climate change. Condé Nast (and all publishers not using recycled paper) needs to hear from you that you don&#8217;t want your news and entertainment delivered on paper that contributes to the destruction of the world&#8217;s forests. Ask them to go green today.</p>
